The Bronx Opera follows the famed mischievous brother and sister into Ilsenstein forest to meet the echoing trees, the little Sandman, the 14 angels of protection, the little Dew Fairy, and the evil witch and her tempting gingerbread house in this classic opera based on the famed Brother Grimm story. Filled with parables about family life and struggles that ring true today. The chorus for this production is made up almost entirely of children from RiverArts Children's Chorus, part of the Rivertowns Arts Council in Hastings-on-Hudson.

Travelers at the Miami Int. Airport were treated to a surprise performance by Florida Grand Opera singers on Feb. 29th, courtesy of the John S. and James L. Knight Foundation's 'Random Acts of Culture' program. A total of six surprise opera performances took the airport by storm. Singers sat and stood casually among other bystanders waiting for flights in terminal D. Then, suddenly, the music began and was shortly followed by seven vocalists performing ' Libiamo' (the Drinking Song) from Verdi's La Traviata.

Met Principal Guest Conductor Fabio Luisi conducts his first house performances of Richard Strauss's tragicomic opera-within-an-opera, Ariadne auf Naxos. The three-performance run features the Met role debuts of Joyce DiDonato as the Composer and Robert Dean Smith as Bacchus, opposite the acclaimed interpretations of Violeta Urmana as Ariadne, Kathleen Kim as Zerbinetta, and Thomas Allen as the Music Master.

A revival of Tchaikovsky's The Queen of Spades will open at the Met on March 11, with a cast led by Karita Mattila as Lisa, a role she sang in the production's 1995 premiere. Mattila's three co-stars are singing their roles for the first time at the Met: Vladimir Galouzine, one of the world's leading interpreters of Hermann; Swedish baritone Peter Mattei as his romantic rival Yeletsky; and dramatic mezzo-soprano Dolora Zajick as the Countess. The energetic Latvian conductor Andris Nelsons leads the opera for the first time at the Met, in a revival of Elijah Moshinsky's 1995 staging. The opera, which is based on a Pushkin story, will also feature Tamara Mumford as Pauline and Alexey Markov as Tomsky.
Italian-American composer Gian Carlo Menotti's The Saint of Bleeker Street, opened at The Dicapo Opera on Saturday night. The Saint of Bleeker Street, written in English and dating from 1954, is the story of a simple young girl in New York's Little Italy who is blessed (or afflicted) with the stigmata and hears voices and sees visions.
Anna Netrebko reprises her celebrated portrayal of Norina, the irresistible and clever romantic heroine of Don Pasquale, in a revival of Donizetti's comic opera that begins performances Friday, October 29. James Levine, in his first-ever performances of this opera, will conduct a cast that also features Matthew Polenzani as the lovelorn Ernesto, Mariusz Kwiecien as the duplicitous Dr. Malatesta, and John Del Carlo as the title character. Renowned Austrian director Otto Schenk will return to the Met to direct the first revival of his production, which The New York Times praised as 'wonderful' and 'insightful' when it premiered in 2006.
Gotham Chamber Opera, Music-Theatre Group and the Opera Company of Philadelphia announced the commission of a new American opera, DARK SISTERS, composed by Nico Muhly with libretto by Stephen Karam, conducted by Neal Goren, and directed by Rebecca Taichman at The Chelsea Art Museum on Thursday, October 28. The three organizations have co-commissioned and will co-produce the opera, which will have its World Premiere in November 2011 at the Gerald W. Lynch Theater at John Jay College, 899 Tenth Avenue, NYC, one of the first works to be presented at the Theater following the creation of a new lobby at the space. The cast will be headed by Caitlin Lynch and Kevin Burdette, with Kristina Bachrach, Jennifer Check, Eve Gigliotti, Brenda Harris, and Jennifer Zetlan. Dark Sisters will also be presented in June 2012 as part of the Opera Company of Philadelphia's chamber opera series at the Perelman Theater.
Takesha Meshé Kizart will make her Met debut as Musetta in Puccini's La Bohème on October 16. She also sings performances on October 20, 23, 28, November 1, and 5, replacing Kristine Opolais, who has withdrawn.
Giuseppe Verdi's popular masterpiece Rigoletto returns to the Met this season featuring five artists in their Met debuts and four performers singing major roles for the first time with the company. On September 29, Lado Ataneli sings the hunchback court jester and Christine Schäfer is his daughter Gilda, both adding new roles to their Met repertory. Conductor Paolo Arrivabeni makes his Met debut, as does Francesco Meli as the Duke of Mantua, Nino Surguladze as Maddalena, and Andrea Silvestrelli as Sparafucile. On October 5, George Gagnidze returns to the role of Rigoletto which he sang at the Met in 2009.
