New York City Opera's VOX Contemporary Opera Lab provides the invaluable opportunity for composers and librettists to hear their works in development performed by the full resources of the wonderful New York City Opera Orchestra and Soloists. We are delighted to announce that Librettist Royce Vavrek (one of ALT's first Resident Artists, librettist of THE HUNGER ART, and currently writing OF THE FLESH for ALT's THE POE PROJECT) is represented on VOX this year by DOG DAYS, his recent collaboration with composer David T. Little.

DOG DAYS is an in-progress work based on the short story by Judy Budnitz that incorporates elements of opera, musical theatre, and rock-infused-concert music to investigate the psychology of a working class American family pitted against a not-so-distant-future wartime scenario. This black comedy asks: is it madness, delusion, or sheer animal instinct that guides us through severely trying times? Where is the line between animal and human, and at what point must we give in to our animal instincts merely to survive?

DOG DAYS will be presented as part of the 2010 VOX Festival at 10:20 PM on Friday April 30th. Click HERE to check out the entire schedule of exciting, boundary busting new works presented this year at VOX at NYU's Skirball Center for Performing Arts.

A Poe Project Preview @Galapagos ArtSpace - 21C Aria - May 27th

What would Edgar Allan Poe be writing if he were alive today? In honor of the 200th Anniversary of Poe's birth, this is the question we asked of three composers and three librettists last year as part of The Composer Librettist Development Program. Under the mentorship of librettist Michael Korie and Producing Artistic Director Lawrence Edelson, these six gifted artists have been developing THE POE PROJECT, a trilogy of one-act psychological thrillers inspired by Poe's short stories. Thanks to a commissioning grant from the New York State Council on the Arts, along with additional support from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs and The ASCAP Foundation: Joseph and Rosalie Meyer Fund, ALT has commissioned the completion of this exciting and haunting new trilogy.

On Thursday May 27th, ALT will present two excerpts from THE POE PROJECT as part of 21C Aria. Born out of the success of the 21c Liederabend that was presented at Galapagos in November 2009, the 21c Salon Series is an on-going series curated and produced by Beth Morrison Projects and presented by Galapagos Art Space in DUMBO, Brooklyn that surveys contemporary vocal music in the form of art song, opera and music-theatre, and comes in many forms including acoustic, amped up, classical, indie-clasical, post-classical and new forms of vocal music waiting to be discovered.

Featured on the 21C Aria Program will be excerpts from BURIED ALIVE - Music by Jeff Myers, Libretto by Quincy Long and OF THE FLESH - Music by Jay Anthony Gach, Libretto by Royce Vavrek. So save the date! Join American Lyric Theater, American Opera Projects, Beth Morrison Projects, Center for Contemporary Opera, The Coterie, Encompass New Opera, Metropolis Opera Project and Opera On Tap for 21c Aria on Thursday May 27th at Gapapagos Art Space. More information coming soon!

Please Note: The full Poe Project Workshop, previously scheduled for May 26th, is being rescheduled for the fall due to artist schedule conflicts. Don't miss this opportunity to get a preview of two operas from the trilogy on May 27th!

Application Deadline for the Composer Librettist Development Program: June 1st

The application deadline for the 2010-2011 Composer Librettist Development Program is June 1st, so if you are considering applying for the CLDP, don't delay!

The CLDP is a tuition free initiative, open to artists selected through a competitive application process. The program includes a core curriculum of classroom training and hands-on workshops with some of the country's leading working artists, including composer Mark Adamo, composer Daniel Catán, composer Anthony Davis, dramaturg Cori Ellison, librettist William Hoffman, librettist Michael Korie, and stage director Rhoda Levine.

Applications are welcome from any emerging composer or librettist who is a U.S. Citizen or legal resident. Artists may apply individually to the program or as a member of a writing team. The CLDP is designed to provide customized mentorship to artists from a wide variety of backgrounds. We encourage applications from artists with classical training, as well as those with non-traditional / non-classical backgrounds who have a passionate interest in writing for the opera stage. We are dedicated to providing opportunities for artists to write works in both English and Spanish.

ALT defines an emerging opera Composer or Librettist as someone who has acquired significant skills as a composer and/or librettist (or playwright) through academic study, practice, and professional experience; who demonstrates a unique and important musical and/or theatrical perspective that could benefit from intense mentorship as part of the CLDP; and who has not yet had a work commissioned or performed by a professional opera company in the United States. Their work in other genres may have been performed professionally, as ALT's definition of emerging applies specifically to an artist's development as a writer for the opera stage. Students of degree granting institutions are not eligible for consideration. There are no age restrictions for participation.

PLEASE NOTE: The CLDP runs from September to May annually in New York City. Residence in the New York metropolitan area is required for participation.

For more information about the CLDP, and to download an application, please visit our newly updated website!

We are grateful for the support of all of our donors, including The National Endowment for the Arts, The New York State Council on the Arts; The New York City Department of Cultural Affairs; The Aaron Copland Fund for Music, The Amphion Foundation, The ASCAP Foundation: Joseph and Rosalie Meyer Fund, The Brabson Library and Educational Foundation, The Dorothy Loudon Foundation, JP Morgan Chase, Microsoft, and Pro Musica Tours.
