The piece then moves to Manhattan, performing on Saturday, January 19, 2013 @ 7:30 p.m. and Sunday, January 20, 2013 @ 2:00 p.m. at The Kaye Playhouse @ Hunter College
Tkts: $25 - $40. Call (212) 772-4448.

The Bronx Opera, the borough's preeminent opera and musical theater company comes closer and closer to its golden anniversary. Season 46 opens with The Thieving Magpie, a melodrama in two acts by Gioachino Rossini, the composer of The Barber of Seville, William Tell, and CINDERELLA.

The story involves a servant girl and her romance with a young soldier. While his father approves, his mother Lucia does NOT - and will stop at nothing to keep the two apart. Her malicious machinations start with the mysterious theft of cutlery and end with the servant girl taken off to be executed! Along the way we meet a lecherous Mayor who must never know the REAL identity of the servant girl's father... and the thieving magpie. Stage director Benjamin Spierman puts it all together, supplying the audience with a spoon (and fork) full of twists and surprises.

Will the servant girl be executed? Will she be saved by her father and live happily ever after with the young soldier? Will she be able to hold off the scheming Mayor? And, of course, the biggest question... WHO STOLE THE SILVER SPOON??? Maybe the butler did it...

Benjamin Spierman directs a production conducted by Michael C. Haigler (January 12) and Michael Spierman (January 13 - 20) featuring Ivan Amaro, Erik Bagger, Juli Borst, John Calkins, Jason Coffey, Darcy Dunn, Sara Fanucchi, Vincent Grana, Kerry Gotschall, Isaac Grier, Luke Grooms, Stuart Homan, Daniel Klein, Eric McKeever, Jennifer Moore, C. David Morrow, Rishi Rane, Jennifer Rossetti, Christopher Sierra, Leslie Tay, and Jack Anderson White.

And join us in May as BxO presents one of the quintessential operas: La boheme.
